Passengers are usually curious about the world, and may have cruised before – though not necessarily with Princess. You could tell Princess was slowly moving into the families-with-kids arena back in 2019, when it refitted the 2004-built Caribbean Princess with a new kids play area and splash park. Sun Princess, however, expands on the line’s offerings with revised spaces and new diversions that are sure to be attractive to families with little ones. What doesn’t take getting used to, though, are some of the incredible, welcomed – and long-overdue – improvements Princess Cruises has made aboard Sun Princess.
What were we thinking of when we designed the new Sun Princess? You.
While its gambling options are fun and its high ceilings are a nice touch, the (permitted) smoking and resulting secondhand fumes (with no enclosed cigar lounge elsewhere) often linger into adjacent venues, including the sushi bar and multiple levels of the atrium. With the traditional “lido” buffet relocated to The Eatery, the only poolside offerings are Lido Greens (custom salads), Lido Grill (burgers and hot dogs), Lido Slice (complimentary pizza), Lido Tacos (serviceable Mexican) and Coffee and Cones. Here, guests will find several innovative water-themed drinks below a waterfall. There’s also Good Spirits at Sea, a venue with high-energy, drink-making sessions. Sun Princess will also feature the exclusive Princess Medallion that will extend Princess’ leadership position in delivering exceptional personalized experiences typical of small ships while enjoying only the best large ship amenities. With the most balconies on any Princess ship, guests can take in the sunshine and crystal clear waters of the Caribbean from the comfort of their cabin.

Enjoy breathtaking views in this resort-style stateroom

Inspired by the terraces of Santorini, it is a multi-level covered deck and first-of-its-kind true glass-enclosed dome ever constructed on a cruise ship. During the day, the Dome features an indoor/outdoor pool, and unique water feature, in a comfortable and relaxed space. At night, the pool becomes a stage, and the Dome completely transforms into an entertainment venue with a South Beach vibe, state-of-the-art lighting effects and the ability to deliver stunning aerial performances. Sun Princess features The Sanctuary, a tranquil haven in an outdoor spa setting.
Review: Oceania Cruises’ Vista
The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years. Princess is nearly 20 years behind some of its big-ship competitors in adding suite zones to ships. But the line is finally acknowledging it might have made a mistake in not jumping on the trend.
First look: Sun Princess, the giant new ship from Princess Cruises
It is not a "cookie-cutter" ship (i.e. part of a standard class used across fleets), but a brand-new design, unique to Princess, which began life as a few lines on the back of a napkin back in 2017. It also heralds a brand-new class, Sphere Class, so called for the eye-catching Sphere which encases the centre of the ship, lets the light flood in and provides stunning sea views. Under development for more than six years, Sun Princess is the first of Princess' new Sphere Class of vessels. They have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess ships and offer several notable new-for-the-line features. Several other cabin categories on the ship, including Premium Oceanview and Interior cabins, have a similar look and features but lack a balcony.
Signature Restaurant
"Really it should be Princess' best self, and really to take the brand to the next level." It is the first of a planned four Sphere Class ships, with the second named ship, Star Princess, confirmed for launch in 2025. Sun Princess was designed from "the ground up", according to Richard Parker, who is in charge of the build.

Soar like a bird 19 decks above the waves on the Sea Breeze Rollglider®, a first at sea.(You can even go for a ride now with this AR preview!) It's just a taste of what you'll find at this wonderland for kids and adults alike. In addition to premium stateroom amenities, Signature Collection suites include access to the Signature Restaurant, Signature Lounge and Signature Sun Deck, a private area of the Sanctuary. This artistically-inspired dining experience will celebrate the essence of “love”. However, the venue was not finished during our sailing, and we were told the menu is still in the works. We received no official word as to when the venue will officially debut on Sun Princess. The Catch is a seafood-centric restaurant showcasing treasures from the sea, like shrimp cocktail, Seafaring Stew, and Calamari with seasoned panko coating and lemon aioli as appetizers.

Age-appropriate activities abound in the Youth & Teen Centers, designed for guests ages six months to 17. Photos, floor plan diagrams, amenities, and furnishings represent typical arrangements and may vary by ship and stateroom. From the moment you step aboard, we want you to feel welcomed and right at home. And with attentive service from a friendly staff that knows what hospitality means, you’ll find your Princess® ship truly is your home away from home. The Catch by Rudi is also a pop-up dinner concept on Sun Princess from renowned Chef Rudi Sodamin.
Further, the cruise line redesigned the layout of the buffet to enhance traffic flow. The brand-new Sun Princess offers more dining options than any other Princess Cruises ship. While we were onboard for only 5 days, we did our best to eat and drink as much as possible.

Or, they can watch sushi crafting at its best from expert chefs at the traditional sushi bar. With so many great complimentary offerings, you certainly do not have to pay extra for dining on Sun Princess (if you don’t want to). Though, this new ship also offers a few specialty restaurants that come with an up-charge. The third level of the main dining room on Sun Princess is referred to as the Americana Diner.
Featuring premium aged beef and fresh seafood, this specialty restaurant offers an intimate dining experience in a classically elegant setting. Guests can also enjoy views of their food prepared in the most extensive show galley on a Princess ship. The stunning Princess Theater sets the stage for Broadway-style shows and comedy acts. Peruse our extensive art gallery, or attend an art history lecture highlighting some of the world’s greatest masters. And don’t miss our exciting Champagne Art Auctions, which give you the chance to view and bid on a wide range of fine art, including pieces by famous artists like Thomas Kinkade, Peter Max, and Michael Godard. It’s no surprise The Shops are awarded “Best Onboard Shopping” from Porthole magazine year after year.
During the day, guests enjoy participatory activities like trivia, game shows, the Wake Show. In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard. Retail Guests will experience an extraordinary retail journey in a transformed space that will include over 25 brands available to cruise guests for the first time at sea.
Enjoy fresh fruits, signature pastas and desserts galore along with your favorite beverages and customizable features like create-your-own salads and sandwiches. The lower deck cabins even lead out onto a keycard-access only private terrace area (pictured), which includes sunbeds and a sunken jacuzzi. It will be the 16th Princess ship to join the fleet, and in a nod to its storied past, Sun Princess will be the third Princess ship to bear the name – the first being the original "Love Boat" from the iconic 1970's TV series, launched in 1974.
Gone are space-hogging walk-in closets and flimsy shower curtains; in their place are a bank of plentiful cabinet drawers, shelving and hanging space along the side entry wall, as in the Deluxe Balcony cabin I occupied. It may take loyal clients some getting used to, as their favorite venues are likely in different spots onboard Sun Princess. Guests booked in full suites will also receive special perks aboard Sun Princess – the largest of which is included admission to the brand-new Signature Lounge designed just for passengers in suite accommodations. These new suites come in different sizes, but all of them have a bedroom that can be sectioned off from the living area, which includes a sofa bed. They’re ideal for parents or grandparents sharing their cruise experience with an adult child, an excellent idea as Sun Princess is perfect for this type of holiday.
The Princess Arena, the most technologically advanced Princess Theater design, has three configurations to maximize sight lines and deliver a truly captivating experience. With a pool by sunlight and a stage for shows by starlight, the glass-enclosed Dome, inspired by the hills of Santorini, features acrobatic performances created in partnership with the renowned Cirque Éloize. The exceptional features of a Signature Sky Suite include luxurious appointments, an expansive stateroom and balcony featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one with a full bath with tub and separate shower, a seating area and sofa bed. Along with special suite-only benefits, this stateroom includes access to the Signature Restaurant, Signature Lounge and private Signature area of The Sanctuary.
